The idea for Pants To Poverty was born out of the Make Poverty History young people’s group.
Pants To Poverty is the natural progression from the make poverty history wristband that 8 million people wore in 2005.
Nelson Mandela came to London and said these inspirational words:
“Today hundreds of millions of people lie trapped and enslaved in the prison of poverty… it’s time to set them free… Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom”.
The reaction from the Make Poverty History young people’s group was:
“hang on! That’s pants! Pants to that… Pants to Poverty!!! Ooh, wait a minute…”
And that was it the idea was sown, this was before the advent of fairtrade cotton and with a loan of just £3000 the group found the best supplier they could making organic underwear.
The project took off immediately Pants To Poverty sold 3000 pairs in a day at Glastonbury… read more of the pants to poverty story here.
